چکیده

In multimedia wireless networks, when a mobile host (MH) moves to a neighbor cell, it requests the base station (BS) to reserve the bandwidth for seamless handoff. The reservation scheme based on the fixed 2-tier cell structure was proposed to prevent the reservation requests from the MHs close to the BSs. In this reservation scheme, the BS requests the reservation only when the MH is outside of the non-reservation zone which is the area within a fixed distance from the BS. In the fixed 2-tier cell structure, however, low-speed MHs degrade the bandwidth utilization by blocking new calls, because they keep the bandwidth reserved for a long time before handoff. Hence, to improve bandwidth utilization, the size of the non-reservation zone needs to be varied according to the speed of the MH. In this paper, we propose a new bandwidth reservation scheme based on the dynamic 2-tier cell structure. In our structure, the size of the non-reservation zone varies according to the speed of an MH. Our bandwidth reservation scheme determines the target cells for the bandwidth reservation using the current position of each MH and calculates the amount of the reserved bandwidth using the handoff probability. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better bandwidth utilization than the conventional reservation scheme based on the fixed 2-tier cell structure.

Dynamic Two-Tier Cell Structure for Bandwidth Reservation of Handoffs in Cellular Networks

To satisfy both the bandwidth efficiency of low-speed mobile hosts (MHs) and seamless handoff of high-speed MHs in cellular networks, this paper proposes a reservation scheme which exploits a dynamic two-tier cell structure and the handoff probability. The dynamic two-tier cell structure determines the reservation and non-reservation zones according to the speed of MHs. The handoff probability ...

An adaptive bandwidth reservation scheme for 4G cellular networks using flexible 2-tier cell structure

Many mechanisms based on bandwidth reservation have been proposed in the literature to decrease connection dropping probability for handoffs in cellular communications. The handoff events occur at a much higher rate in packet-switched fourth generation mobile communication networks than in traditional cellular systems. An efficient bandwidth reservation mechanism for the neighboring cells is th...

Optimal Bandwidth Reservation Schedule in Cellular Networks

Efficient bandwidth allocation strategy with simultaneous fulfillment of QoS requirement of a user in a mobile cellular network is still a critical and an important practical issue. We explore the problem of finding the reservation schedue that would minimize the amount of time for which bandwidth has to be allocated in a cell while meeting the QoS constraint. With the knowledge about the the a...

Managing Abr Capacity in Reservation-based Slotted Networks

For slotted networks carrying full multi-media traac to work successfully, it is essential that connection setup and management is done well under all traac conditions. Major challenges remain with the current state of the technology, however, particularly on how one copes with traac bursts. Existing reservation-based networks do not allow the user to dynamically adjust his bandwidth requiremen...
